New Painting - and where it came from

If I get this one done by the time of my show, it will definitely NOT be dry. Worked on the grisaille all weekend and started adding color tonight. Will update tomorrow.
3 days and counting! Tick, tick, tick...

This week's syndicate cartoons

Even with my show looming next week, I somehow managed to squeeze a couple of national cartoon ideas in yesterday (nothing like waiting until the last moment!) Hope everyone has a great weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the opening next week. Here's a link to RSVP on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/326rrpc

Dog study from Wednesday night coffee

Sketched this up last night during an enlivened discussion on the future of art in Jacksonville. On cartoon deadline tonight. Gotta run!

Back to the figure

I attended the weekly figure drawing session at TAC (The ART Coop) last night. It was great to catch up with a few friends and draw from the model again. It took the first hour to knock the rust off, but I think I got a couple of keepers at the end. Next week's opening is progressing well. 3 more paintings have been framed and I'll be delivering everything next week. Hope everyone can attend. It's Thursday Sept. 2nd from 6 - 8 PM at The Corse Gallery in Avondale.

Another school related cartoon

Back in 2008, I was let go from one of my local cartooning gigs. It was over a cartoon that was sparked (in part) by a conversation I had with a teacher in Office Depot. She had a basket full of art and school supplies, and I just kind of offhandedly mentioned that she must have a big family. "Oh no," she said, "these are for my students." She was buying supplies (out of her own pocket) for her students. And this was BEFORE the recession really took hold. Looks like this sad trend continues. Let's just hope it doesn't really come to this.

School starts Monday around here. The next time you're out and about, and you run into a teacher, thank them for what they do. And, if you're a parent and you're happy with the job your kid's teacher is doing, tell them - tell their boss. They deserve that. Happy weekend!

Today's local fare

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
School Board+cartoon=trouble. We'll see.
Here's a quote from my editor's opinion piece last week:
"On a broader scale, (both county and) school board candidates need to do more talking about and commit to a future of limited or no growth in discretionary spending for coming decades. We’re dealing with dwindling revenues and a body politic that’s had it up to here with salaries and benefits that exceed what those of us in the private sector have to live with."

New work in progress

I worked over the weekend on some more tags and a few more drawings. This one in particular I liked, so I decided to work it up into a larger painting. I'll post the beginning sketch, a detail, and the overall piece thus far. It seems a little friendlier than some of the previous works. Don't know what that means, but I'll roll with it. Two weeks until my opening now, and I can definitely feel it. Hope everyone can make plans to attend!

Charlie, Maxine and Jim

Had a great time at the Jacksonville AIGA Cocktails & Creatives last night. It was nice seeing both familiar and new faces. I should really try to get out to more of these. Anyway, here's my last syndicate cartoon of the week. I actually dealt with the exact same issue on both a national and local level. I guess political corruption and ethics violations run the gamut.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
Stay in touch.

Process

Thanks to everyone who put up with me shoving an invitation in their hand at ArtWalk. Just so happens that the theme was "PetWalk," so everyone that I saw with a dog, I gave an invite to. Hope you all can make it! And remember, the opening is Thursday September 2. The September issue of ARBUS will say it's on the 1st, but it's actually on the 2nd. Looking forward to it.
Cheers,
Ed
