Let 'em eat cake!

Here's a Dr. Sketchy Moleskine sketch from April 20 that I'm just now getting around to posting. They've moved Dr. Sketchys to Wednesday now, which put a bit of a kink in our Wednesday night SketchUp schedule (we've moved it to Tuesdays for now). The theme was something like "Sexy 50's Retro Homemaker." She baked a cake in her bra and garter. Yes! Anyway, I wanted to take a second to welcome our newest follower from China - Hello Yufu Jiang! Be sure to sign up for updates at the bottom of this page, and have a GREAT weekend everybody.

A gaggle of cartoons

I know, I know. I've been a bit slow in posting my cartoons lately. Blame a VERY busy start to the Summer, and a full schedule. I can't seem to string two days together for anything other than deadlines lately. Hopefully that will calm down in May. Anyway, here are a few cartoons (both local and National) that slipped thru the cracks last month. Hopefully they are pretty much self explanatory.

Zoo Sketch Trip - April 2011

Sorry it's taken me so long to get these posted. It's been a crazy week, and it's only Tuesday!

We had a great time sketching at the Jacksonville Zoo last week. I really wish Henry had a blog, because his sketches were awesome! Anyway, here's what I came up with. Our buddy, the Silverback Gorilla was being a little shy (unlike last time) so I couldn't see him too well. I still think I had the best time drawing him though. I love his form, and just the massive weight of his body. You've got to work pretty fast when you're drawing at the zoo. The animals are rarely cooperative, and they move around a lot. I'm looking forward to going back later in the summer and studying the birds a little more.

Friday's syndicate cartoon

Here's today's cartoon for the syndicate. It's been on my board since Tuesday. Doh!

I'm delivering art work today & will try to get my zoo sketches from yesterday posted later.

Cheers,

Today's cartoon

Here's a cartoon that was inspired by this article. If you've got kids you should read it. Heck, even if you don't have kids you should read it. Scared the hell out of me. If you eliminate art, music and sports from schools and just teach to standardized tests all day, what kind of citizens do you create?

Sunday Figure Drawing

I like these a lot more today than I did yesterday. Not sure why. 2 pages from my Moleskine.

Today's cartoon

Wanted to get this one up and to the syndicate before tomorrow's threatened Govt. shutdown.

Time to pay the taxes

They just can't agree upon what to do with your great-grand-children's money. And now, with a Government shutdown looming, this cartoon seems more appropriate than ever.

Today's cartoon

I really feel for teachers across Florida. It seems they are having to make due with less and less each year. Meanwhile lawmakers in Tallahassee are in the process of tying teacher's pay to student performance, a move dismissed by many as unreliable. At a recent Superintendents conference in Tallahassee, the speaker opened by asking "would you like to hear the bad news first or the abysmal news first?" Now comes word that Music, Art and (gasp) even sports face the chopping block. One wonders what is left to cut after that, and if the future Florida classroom looks like a bunch of kids sitting around staring at one another.

Pedro & The Clown for April

This month I decided to go after the St. Johns County School district's hiring practices. Seems a convicted felon was allowed onto the advisory council at one of our Elementary Schools. I had originally proposed an editorial cartoon on this topic for another paper, but the idea didn't fly, so I figured I'd let P&C handle it in the Underground. Here's the story we ran. Enjoy. -Ed

Horse Studies

No figure drawing today, so in preparation for an upcoming commission, I decided to pull out my animal anatomy books and do a few sketches in my Moleskine. With these I'm just trying to familiarize myself with the structure of the animal, the various components that make up the whole, and how a horse actually moves. How I'll approach the actual character or spirit will have to wait until I meet the horse in person. I'm really hoping that I get to work with this client, as I would love to paint one of these massive creatures life-sized! Stay tooned.

RE: Anonymous comments

Hey gang. Just as a reminder: I would love to post all of your comments @ my cartoons, but I do not make it a practice to post anything from anonymous sources. If you want me to put up your comments (good or bad) you must leave your name or your online identity. It's the same as if you were sending a letter or email to the editor of any newspaper in America. So, no name, no flame.

Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Peegate

In office for less than a year and Rick Scott is already making life soooo easy for the State's editorial cartoonists. The request for a cartoon featuring the voters who elected him is forthcoming.

BTW, this one didn't get past one of my editors, but the second paper I showed it to decided they wanted it. My wife also thought that it was funny but "uncouth." That's when I knew I had to get it published. "But he's peeing on the State!" she said. Uh.., yeah. Now let's see if the syndicate runs it.
