Forgot to post this one on Friday. Well, it looks like the "great experiment" in Europe has done nothing except bring down the world economy. Countries (and esp. their banks) are so interconnected now that it seems when a politician sneezes in Italy, the entire planet catches a cold. I found it interesting that the moment the EU determined that they were actually going to get together and hammer out a plan, that our markets stabilized. We'll see how long it lasts.

I just hope Cain hangs on another week. Actually, I hope he doesn't drop out at all. Newt turned infidelity into an art form, so why is he surging in the polls? Bill Clinton did exactly what everyone thought he did in the oval office, and was elected to a second term. I have a theory about the whole thing, but my wife says I need to keep that one to myself.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get these posted. It's been a busy couple of weeks with home repairs and some renovation. I'll post the 3 minute gestures first and then a longer pose from my Moleskine. I was pretty happy with the gestures. It's always a little dicey when doing them in pen & ink, but I think these are OK.

In other news, it looks like "Pedro & the Clown have found a new home! That means I'll be posting monthly installments of my comic strip starting next week. Keep an eye out for it. I feel so fortunate to be able to continue to develop these characters. In the meantime I'll post the cover art for the first edition of the new paper.

I got a kick out of this week's vote in the House which passed a resolution reaffirming that our country's motto remain “In God We Trust.” Really? That's the best they could do? Meanwhile the Country is going straight down the tubes because they can't agree on much else. The second cartoon deals with the new smoke trails leading out of Herman Cain's campaign kitchen.

Wanted to get this one in today. Friday's gonna be a busy one, so here it is. I'm still working on my Rick Perry caricature, but I'm starting to enjoy drawing him. He's the perfect politician for caricature: big hair, big suit, and big eyebrows. Evidently he also has a big appetite for campaign contributions. I heard an interesting quote from a Texas newspaper man this morning. He said that if you want to report on Rick Perry, just follow the money.

On a separate note, I found out from my good buddy and fellow cartoonist Jeff Parker that my Pony Express cartoon was in The Tallahassee Democrat on Monday. Check back a few posts to see it.

This model can really hold a pose too, so I got several pretty decent studies completed. I'm pressed for time today, so I'll only post one. I actually finished out a Moleskine yesterday. Another local cartoon

I was sitting in my studio on Monday, trying to come up with something on the smoke from the forest fires here in Northeast Florida. It has been bad. You can't even go outside in the morning without smelling that horrible, ashy smell. Not to mention the effect on allergy sufferers (like myself). Well, as I was sketching out thumbnails, I noticed that the smell was coming in through the air conditioning ducts. Great! Now we all have to live like the bubble boy.

I was thinking about how the group of GOP presidential candidates is trashing the ideals that Republicans have always stood for. My Dad liked to call himself a Goldwater Republican, and there's probably a little bit of that in me. I doubt most people today would even know who Barry Goldwater was, much less his convictions. Sad. It was also really weird seeing them debate each other at the Ronald Reagan library. I love how they hold Reagan up as an ideal, and then preach from platforms so far removed from the Gipper. Anyway, this led to this image of the poor, tired elephant waiting to be seen by all of those who would want to "doctor" the party.

Most people don't know this, but Baker County is a hot spot for pot growers in the southeast. Which means helicopter fly-overs are quite common. Lately there has been a rash of detections and arrests, and upon seizure the perps always say stuff like: "I knew when I heard you guys buzzin' around up there I was busted."

I thought that this was a cool way to pay homage to one of my favorite cartoonists, and illuminate the situation.

I worked up a few 3 minute pen and ink gestures from the same pose, so I think I'll post those. It's tricky getting everything in there in only 3 minutes, but I think these were OK. I like to use ink for my gestures, because you have to be more sure about every line you put down. There are no "do-overs." We also did several 20 minute poses. I worked those up in the Moleskine in pencil and ink.

I'm still working towards the Sept 9th opening of the 2X2X5 show. Looks like I'm gonna get all 5 of my paintings finished on time. They'll still be wet though!

We've got a serious problem here in North Florida with the lack of rain. Retention ponds are low, and as a result fish kills are becoming more common. To make matters worse, yards are still being over fertilized and that fertilizer is making it's way into storm drains, retention ponds and eventually our waterways. We also get these weird algae blooms when the oxygen levels drop in the creeks and rivers.

I've never drawn from this model before, so I didn't know what to expect. But she held a pose like a stone, and it was nice to get back to drawing the figure again (a nice break from working on my landscapes for September's show). Today I heard her pronounce that she would no longer be taking questions about her husband or their business. So of course I rushed to get it to the syndicate for the weekend slot. Or another way to look at it is: a few months rent, 10 car payments, a new computer, a cruise, or a week in New York. Just something to think about from an ex-smoker. It seems big business can't keep their nasty toes out of Florida's rivers and waterways. After the announcement last week that Georgia Pacific plans to pipe paper mill waste directly into the heart of the St. Johns River, comes word this week that a company out of Dallas Texas wants to extract tannins from the St. Marys river for use in fertilizer. Tannins are the elements in the river that turns the water the color of tea. The effects of the removal of tannins on wildlife and the ecosystem has not been thoroughly studied, nor has the effect of pumping the "cleaned" water back into the river.

Sunday Figure Sketch Results

Had a great time at our weekly figure drawing session yesterday, with the added bonus of lunch with friends afterwards! I'll post a couple of gestures and a few Moleskine pages. As a little experiment, I purposely exaggerated the form in the last drawing. Lately I've been interested in creating more focus on those areas that define a person's physical personality. What does a thin neck say about that person? Why did that hand fall just there like that? What does the way the hair is pulled back tightly say about the person's mood? One way to do this is through exaggeration. I'm basically using the same formula I use to create a caricature of someone, only now I'm turning the tables and incorporating it into a figure drawing. We'll see where this leads.

Beyond all of the "Osama was a bad dude and we're really glad he's dead" cartoons, I wanted to do something that spoke to the billions we pour into Pakistan every year. I guess we're not really getting such a good return on our investment when they're harboring public enemy number one. Let me say that one more time: We were PAYING Pakistan to shelter Bin Laden. Your tax dollars at work.

Here's a Dr. Sketchy Moleskine sketch from April 20 that I'm just now getting around to posting. They've moved Dr. Sketchys to Wednesday now, which put a bit of a kink in our Wednesday night SketchUp schedule (we've moved it to Tuesdays for now). The theme was something like "Sexy 50's Retro Homemaker." She baked a cake in her bra and garter. Yes! Anyway, I wanted to take a second to welcome our newest follower from China - Hello Yufu Jiang! A gaggle of cartoons

I know, I know. I've been a bit slow in posting my cartoons lately. Blame a VERY busy start to the Summer, and a full schedule. I can't seem to string two days together for anything other than deadlines lately. Hopefully that will calm down in May. Anyway, here are a few cartoons (both local and National) that slipped thru the cracks last month. Hopefully they are pretty much self explanatory.

Zoo Sketch Trip - April 2011

Sorry it's taken me so long to get these posted. It's been a crazy week, and it's only Tuesday!

We had a great time sketching at the Jacksonville Zoo last week. I really wish Henry had a blog, because his sketches were awesome! Anyway, here's what I came up with. Our buddy, the Silverback Gorilla was being a little shy (unlike last time) so I couldn't see him too well. I still think I had the best time drawing him though. I love his form, and just the massive weight of his body. You've got to work pretty fast when you're drawing at the zoo. The animals are rarely cooperative, and they move around a lot. I'm looking forward to going back later in the summer and studying the birds a little more.

Here's a cartoon that was inspired by this article. If you've got kids you should read it. Heck, even if you don't have kids you should read it. Scared the hell out of me. If you eliminate art, music and sports from schools and just teach to standardized tests all day, what kind of citizens do you create?
