One more cartoon for the week & a shout out

Here's another idea that I got late today, so I decided to go ahead and ink it, and submit it to my syndicate. After Blago's impeachment today and the Senate's subsequent back-peddling on Burris, I couldn't resist.
On a separate note, I got a message alert today from a blogger in St. Augustine who has picked up the story of my suspension from The Record. Here's that piece. The city government in St. Augustine has essentially banned all forms of street art in our nation's oldest city. Street artizans had been selling their creations for as long as anyone can remember on St. George Street downtown, and it had been a huge tourist draw. Now that's all gone, and I must say that the last time I was down there, things seemed much quieter. Another little piece of small town charm and history eliminated. Fools.

...and I can do anything...

Well, my Gators did it again. As an alumnus who sat through 8 agonizing years of losing seasons, I can't get enough of this. Happy weekend (for sure).

Wouldn't want the job

Looks like Obama is going to be facing more than he'd bargained for. Let's just hope that he has the stomach, the moxie, and the brains to handle it all. I know I wouldn't want the job.

A local cartoon

I'm still doing cartoons for my longest running weekly (thank goodness). Here's this week's. With the faltering economy, many of the projects that were on the county's stove, have now been pushed to a back burner. But one, which will be an industrial park to sort containers, is stll full steam ahead. The boats come in at the coast and the containers are then transported to Baker County for sorting and distribution.

Random scribblins'

I've got a little extra time on my hands lately, so I've been trying to fill it up by practicing my sketching and Photoshop skills. Here's a page of sketches that I thought I'd upload. People ask me all the time about my process. I must say that 99% of the time, an idea comes from a page just like this. A pose will inspire me, or the expression on a face. Maybe it's the way a hand or foot is positioned. I never know; I just kind of go with it. Enjoy.

We didn't have drawing class this past weekend, so no figure drawings this week. I have been promised that regular classes will resume on Sunday, so look for that. Also look for a few cartoons to be posted by Friday.

Cheers,

Ed

A GOOD start to 2009

Here's another illustration for my portfolio that I'm pretty proud of. It's not too often that I say that, but this time 'round, I'm happy. I got this idea from an old gesture sketch that I did in figure drawing class. The idea kind of "grew out of" the pose. I like it when that happens. Anyway, I'm getting ready to post this on a few comic art forums. I'll let you know what kind of feedback I get. In the meantime, if you'd like to comment here, please feel free.

Cheers, and, Happy New Year!

First illustration of 2009

Along the lines of continuing to stylize female portraits & faces, here's my first illustration of 2009. I think I'll include the rough drawing with it, as it came out pretty good as well, and will show some of the adjustments I made as I colored it. You can also see my construction lines of the face, as I built the form. We're getting back on our regular figure drawing class routine this Sunday, so look for some sketches on Monday. I hope everyone had a safe and happy new years celebration, and I hope that 2009 brings even more joy. Keep in touch. -Ed

And, even more practice

Here's another illustration I've been working on today. I'm basically trying to combine a kind of manga stylization with a splash of traditional figure drawing. I don't want them to look too "figurative" and at the same time not too "cartoony." Somewhere in between. How'm I doing?

I've enlarged the eyes a bit and exaggerated the lips, making them fuller. I want to get to a point where I can just draw these very fast, and very simple.

More practice

Here's another comic illustration for my portfolio. When I started this, all I knew was that I wanted to create a female comic hero character. I actually took several poses and combined them to come up with this stance, and I'm pretty happy with it. Now if I can just get someone to notice these, and offer me some work.

Enjoy, and Happy New Year!

A new Samurai-Geisha

Oops! Here's one that I had forgotten to upload last week. Enjoy.
