Wednesday Night Starbucks sketching

We had a crowd of seven last night, and I was kind of pinned in the corner, so I sketched people at our table. I liked Jimmy's drawing posture so much, that I decided to transform him into another elephant-headed doodler. Enjoy Jim.

A day at the Zoo

The Jacksonville Zoological Gardens welcomed Emmy, Henry & myself last week for a full day of sketching and enjoying the beautiful fall day. I concentrated more on the gestures of the animals, while I think Henry tried to do more finished drawings. I sure wish he'd start a blog. You guys would really like his work. Anyway, I'll post these in no particular order, although I will tell you that we started with the wart hogs and ended with the giraffes. My favorite drawing turned out to be my least favorite animal - go figure. The topper of the day was definitely the Silverback Gorilla. What an amazing animal - HUGE. You have no idea how big he is until there's only 18" of space, and a 2" thick piece of glass between you. He seemed to be posing for us, and he definitely drew a crowd.

Today's cartoon

I was able to use this one locally and for my syndicate (love it when that happens). I've got so much stuff to post here today, I'm not sure where to start. Oh well, look for more cartoons, doodles from our trip to the zoo last week, and more Halloween figure sketches later.

The buying and selling of elections is a serious threat to our democracy, and definitely not funny. Our country is being bought out from under us, and most voters seem unaware. Be informed on November 2 - and PLEASE get out and vote.

Dat hosted a figure drawing session in his studio last evening. I stuck around afterwards and chatted for about an hour as well. It was good to see those guys again. Rhee-moved

By not showing support for DC Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, President Obama all but sealed her fate - leading to word of her resignation yesterday. I guess that DC voting block is just too important to piss off. Especially with a second term looming in the balance. Oh well, public school students get the shaft again. Caffeinated Creators?

Here's some Ganesh studies I worked up last night over a Grande Pike's Blend with 3 raw sugars and soy. That's Bernard on the left, and Philip on the right. The guy in front is probably me. We're trying to come up with a name now for our (not so) little Wednesday night sketch group at Starbucks. We had a record crowd last night, as a few of my buds from the AIGA showed up to drink copious amounts of coffee, sketch and shoot the sh*t. It's kind of amazing to me that what started as a couple of guys meeting for coffee, has turned into a Wednesday night ritual. We've had animators, graphic designers, painters, photographers, comic artists - you name it - sketch with us now. So come join us every Wednesday (except on ArtWalk or Dr. Sketchy nights) and show us what you've got! But be warned - you will be drawn with an elephant's head.

Jumping Ship

News this week that a couple of local Republican County Commissioners have broken ranks and are now supporting Alex Sink for Governor. Blind-sided

Baker County's High School football schedule this year is peppered with what would appear to be "gimmes." After a 65-0 trouncing of a small Georgia school last week, the paper ran a survey on the website: Should BCHS continue to pad its football schedule with teams of little talent or experience?

I say, be careful what you wish for.

Survey results are running 3 to 1 "no" BTW.

Post-dental Starbucks

Stopped in at Starbucks after my morning tooth cleaning to get a jump start on the coffee stains. Looks like the Moleskine got the worst of it - I think that's a drop of coffee at the top of the page. This girl had settled into a corner with her laptop & paperwork, and I could tell she wasn't leaving anytime soon. Had the perfect angle to draw her without being noticed, so I did. I really should be working on a cartoon now.

Sunday Sketch & Misc.

I attended the sketch session at FCCJ today. Working in the Moleskine for the last two poses, I combined both drawings on the same page. I also did a couple of others outside the Moleskine (gestures, color, etc.), and I will post those when I have time. Lots happening lately - I've got three drawings up for bid on Ebay over the next few days (http://myworld.ebay.com/halltoons2qr3), I've got two drawings in the JCVA Fall Show at Gallery L, and I've started a new series of paintings and drawings.

The sky is not falling

It seems like every year, for the past five years (basically since Katrina) the hurricane prognosticators have been over-prognosticating with their prognostications. I absolutely love it when they predict apocalyptic storms, verging on end of world scenarios; then the season turns out to be relatively mild. Your grandfather was right - you can't predict the weather. Death and taxes yes - weather - no. These cartoons always get me into trouble with the local meteorologists. A tough bunch those meteorologists - NOT. Now watch. It'll rain for the next month straight right over my house!

Blech! I am SO ready for this election year to be OVER.

Sunday Sketch Class

Attended the Sunday sketch class today. I'm on deadline, so I'll just post the two drawings I did in the Moleskine. For the last drawing they took away the model stand and the model sat on the floor. So I got a ladder and sketched from an even more elevated perspective.
