Another school related cartoon

Back in 2008, I was let go from one of my local cartooning gigs. It was over a cartoon that was sparked (in part) by a conversation I had with a teacher in Office Depot. She had a basket full of art and school supplies, and I just kind of offhandedly mentioned that she must have a big family. "Oh no," she said, "these are for my students." She was buying supplies (out of her own pocket) for her students. And this was BEFORE the recession really took hold. Looks like this sad trend continues. Let's just hope it doesn't really come to this.

School starts Monday around here. The next time you're out and about, and you run into a teacher, thank them for what they do. And, if you're a parent and you're happy with the job your kid's teacher is doing, tell them - tell their boss. They deserve that. Happy weekend!

Writing from experience, I think teachers reaching into their pockets has always been and will always be part of the profession. In some respects, teachers should not have to do this, but in other ways it comes part and parcel with why we went into the profession in the first place.
