Thursday's Local Toon

Privatization of NEFSH has been an ongoing issue in Baker County for some time now. Employees have been mostly against it, as they fear any outside private interests will be detrimental to the future of the hospital. With the upcoming elections, Florida is going to have to decide between the current sitting Democratic Chief Financial Officer of the State and a wealthy Republican who comes from the private health business sector, and carries a not so stellar reputation. Take your choice.

Ed, how often and why do you choose to go with a vertical/portrait composition? Do you find that the composition make a more effective cartoon at times?

It's a compositional tool in the editoonist's arsenal that is used far too infreguently. There was a time when many cartoonists used the vertical format with great impact. I like to use it when I am making a vertical "statement." Like if you scroll to the bottom of my blog you will see a vertical Capitol Building with people climbing on it. For me, that cartoon would have been much less effective if I had gone with a horizontal format. I'm always looking for the opportunity to use the vertical format. Caveat: make sure that the paper you are submitting to is set up to accept it.
